Everyone has old T-shirts and tank tops at home that they wear or keep only for nostalgia. But the truth is that many of them no longer look their best. Don’t want to throw them away? We don’t blame you at all. And you don’t have to. Instead, you can turn them into beautiful and practical fabric bags that are great for small shopping trips and for the beach.
The method is so simple that even a child could manage it. It’s important not to mix up the sides and to make it so that the nicer side is on the outside. The best part is not only that you’ll reuse a favorite T-shirt, but you also won’t need much to do it. The bag isn’t sewn or glued. You only need to prepare two things:
- an old T-shirt (you can also use a tank top),
- scissors that cut fabric well.
Getting started
First, lay the T-shirt out on a table and cut off about two centimeters of fabric from its bottom. Don’t throw it away, you’ll still need that strip. Then fold the T-shirt exactly in half and align the neck and the sleeves. Next, cut out a curved section at the neck and sleeves (if it has any). This will determine how wide the bag’s handles will be. Some prefer them wider, others narrower. In this case, make them however you want.
Finishing touches
At this point you’re almost finished. Yes, it’s that simple. After cutting you’ll have the shape of a tank top. Turn the fabric so you’re looking at the inside. Now take the bottom part of the T-shirt and gather it together. Now take the strip you cut off at the beginning. Use it to tie the bottom together. Make sure the knot is really tight, otherwise your groceries will fall out at the first opportunity.
Turn the T-shirt back to the front side and hooray, you have a new, beautiful fabric bag! Believe me, no one will even recognize that it’s an old T-shirt or tank top. The pattern will of course be your favorite, because it will be a beloved piece from your wardrobe, so you’ll never forget to take it with you on a shopping trip.
