Although the thicker hairs that appear on the chin and around the lips are not very aesthetic to the eye, they occur in many women. They are essentially caused by hormonal changes, but they can also be caused by a much more serious health condition.
Here are 7 reasons that can cause excessive facial hair in women.
1. Genetics
As with so many things in life, genetic factors can be behind the hairs that appear on the chin. If it is also common in your grandmother or mother, you will probably have it too.
2. Hormonal disorder
When your body goes through odd changes, hormones are to blame in most cases. If androgen levels (male sex hormones) increase, it can lead to hair growing on the chin.
3. Menopause
As we age, changes occur in the body’s hormonal balance. When a woman reaches menopause, she begins to produce less and less of the hormone estrogen, which is the female sex hormone. If hair appears during this time, the reason is clear.
4. Polycystic ovary syndrome
If age is not responsible for the appearance of your hair, it is likely that you have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOSZ). This condition affects the reproductive organs and hormones. Symptoms include hair loss, irregular menstruation, infertility, infertility and ovarian cysts.
5. Cushing’s syndrome
Excessive hair growth can also be associated with Cushing’s syndrome, a condition caused by the overproduction of a hormone called cortisol. Excessive hair growth is just one of many symptoms. Stretch marks, weight gain and type 2 diabetes may also develop.
6. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia
This is a condition that is usually diagnosed at birth. This disorder affects one in 15,000 children. The enzyme needed for a certain secretion of hormones in the adrenal glands is missing. The result is that the body produces more male hormones, which triggers excessive hair growth.
7. Contraception or pregnancy
One of the biggest hormonal changes a woman’s body can go through is pregnancy. This can cause a change in hair growth. Similarly, taking contraceptives can cause unusual hair growth in the user. These changes are usually temporary and disappear once the body returns to normal.
The simplest and best method is waxing and laser treatment, because shaving only strengthens the ends of the hairs.
