Silybum marianum, or milk thistle, is an interesting little plant with small purple flowers that most often grows among weeds. It is covered with small spines and can be seen, for example, on the edges of roads, in pastures or meadows. Milk thistle is valued especially for its health effects; it is said to even help with psychological problems. What is it most commonly used for?

  • Prevention of cancer
  • Against inflammations
  • In the treatment of diabetes
  • In the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Not only for liver cleansing

Milk thistle has been widely used as an herb for centuries. It is usually taken to cleanse the liver, but it can also help with other ailments. The main active compound in milk thistle is silymarin. It has anti-inflammatory effects, is an antioxidant, and even fights viruses. Milk thistle can be added to food or taken as a dietary supplement.

Although, unfortunately, a cure for cancer is not yet known, milk thistle has proven effective in many cases. For example, in 2010 scientists found that another of its compounds, silibinin, prevents growth, invasion and metastasis of prostate cancer cells. In addition, it has been shown to help prevent skin cancer, colon cancer and others.

Inflammation and OCD

Chronic inflammation is often the cause of illnesses and deaths, especially in modern times. Doctors observed patients with knee osteoarthritis and found that milk thistle reduces inflammation. It also showed good results in treating rosacea (a chronic skin condition). Milk thistle also lowers blood sugar and cholesterol levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. There are many studies showing that it can be very helpful in treating diabetes.

Scientists have also found that taking milk thistle has effects similar to fluoxetine, the drug given to patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, before taking it, as with other supplements, you should first consult your doctor.
