Garlic, like other vegetables, is suitable for freezing and storing for the winter. Even after freezing, if done correctly, it does not lose its vitamins or its medicinal properties. Are you sure you store garlic in the freezer so that it doesn’t lose its qualities? Garlic has a whole range of healing properties and is added to almost every meal, so it should always be on hand at home.

Before placing garlic in the freezer, make sure you do not freeze any garlic that might be starting to spoil. That would ruin all the other garlic in the freezer and you’d be out of supplies. At the same time, it’s best to freeze the freshest possible garlic so you retain as many vitamins and beneficial substances as you can. If you have carefully sorted the garlic you plan to freeze, go for it!

Several ways to freeze garlic

  • whole heads
  • whole peeled cloves
  • garlic crushed or pressed with a garlic press

If you decide to freeze whole heads of garlic, do not peel or otherwise clean them. Just make sure they look healthy. Wrap the garlic heads carefully in plastic wrap and place them in the freezer. After thawing, your home will be filled with a strong garlic aroma and they will not have lost their medicinal properties. You can also clean and peel the garlic and put the peeled cloves into a zip-top bag. This will make further processing easier. When adding them to dishes, these prepared cloves do not have to be fully thawed, depending on how you need to use them. They can be completely or partially frozen. You can also store crushed or garlic-press garlic in the freezer. This type of storage is ideal especially for small freezers, as it takes up very little space compared to whole garlic heads. Crushed garlic can be frozen again in a bag, but you can also store it in ice cube trays. Garlic frozen this way is ideal to add to spreads, soups, salads and dressings. None of these storage methods will cause the loss of the health-beneficial substances contained in garlic.
