If you are a keen gardener and have a garden, you surely want to adorn it to perfection and make use of it in every way. Find out how cheaply and easily you can improve your garden using inexpensive and readily available vinegar – not just against weeds. Ordinary spirit vinegar will do, which you can get for up to fifteen crowns – often less. You will surely be delighted with the results; let yourself be inspired.
Delight your plants
Plants that prefer acidic soil will be thrilled by the use of vinegar. They will be beautiful and strong. For example, you can keep rhododendrons, hydrangeas, gardenias or azaleas in good condition. Its effect is certainly temporary, but vinegar can give the soil in which the plants grow the necessary acidity. Mix a cup of vinegar with four liters of water and then water the plants.
Get rid of slugs
Vinegar is very popular among gardeners, there is no doubt about that. Neutralize snails with vinegar. Mix vinegar with water and spray the affected areas. The snails will soon leave the garden alone. However, splash/spray the areas several times, not just once.
Get rid of snakes
Do you live near a river or have a garden placed here? If so, you surely know that snakes often visit you – slowworms, grass snakes, and even vipers. Does it send shivers down your spine? Try getting rid of them using vinegar. Vinegar has a penetrating and irritating smell that snakes can sense from meters away. It’s best to pour it around the perimeter of the garden, especially where snakes crawl.
Dirty flowerpots
Clay flowerpots are perfect for gardens, but over time they become unsightly – they can rot, mildew, or develop stains. Prepare a bucket, pour vinegar and water into it at a ratio of one to three, and rinse the pots. This will remove all unsightly deposits.
Against weeds
Highly concentrated vinegar can rid a walkway of weeds. But also moss and other live greenery that looks out of place. Do not dilute the vinegar and pour or spray it directly onto all problematic areas.
Get rid of ants
Vinegar is also perfect for removing ants. Prepare a solution of water and vinegar and apply it where the ants occur most. The strong smell will force the ants to avoid it. Mix vinegar with water in a 1:1 ratio.
Repel pests and unwanted visitors
Moles, mice, voles, cats, deer, dogs, martens – all such animals find the smell of vinegar offensive and therefore avoid it. So if these animals threaten your crops, prepare old clothes soaked in vinegar – they can also be old rags – and hang them around trees, on fences and wherever possible. This method reliably repels wildlife. You can also use the rags on a decorative scarecrow, dress it up, and it will help effectively. We recommend soaking the fabric in vinegar every week.
Did you get cut flowers?
If you brought or received cut flowers, you surely know that they wilt in two days. Their lifespan can be easily extended with vinegar, sugar and water. Just mix two tablespoons of vinegar, one tablespoon of sugar and water; the flowers will stay beautiful longer.
Get rid of rust
Vinegar also serves as a great rust remover. If rust has appeared on your garden tools, soak them in undiluted vinegar. Leave them there just a few minutes and then rinse and wipe with a cloth.
Fungicide for plants
For indoor and outdoor plants you can use vinegar as protection against fungi and molds. Boil two teaspoons of vinegar and four teaspoons of chamomile tea. Pour the cooled mixture into a spray bottle and spray the affected plants.
Eco-friendly insecticide
Vinegar is an ecological solution against unwanted insects in the garden. Make a vinegar spray of three parts water to one part vinegar and one tablespoon of dish soap. Mix, shake and apply to unwanted insects. We recommend using it once every 14 days.
