The muslin spider is one of the most distinctive spiders. Their rounded bodies and long slender legs make them easy to recognize and we’ve probably all seen them hanging on rays … literally sometimes!

However, there are many misconceptions about this common spider. We don’t know much about kosa spiders, but these 15 facts could completely change the way you think about this insect!

They are not exactly spiders

It’s true! Scorpion spiders probably belong to the scorpion family rather than to the spider family. They have only one pair of eyes, do not produce silk and instead of a “waist” they have a fused body like most spiders.

They are not venomous

A common myth says that kosa spiders are very venomous, but in fact they don’t have fangs and cannot even release venom. As far as humans are concerned, they are completely harmless to us.

They’ve been around us for years

In Scotland scientists discovered a well-preserved spider fossil that is at least 400 million years old.

That means they existed 200 million years before the dinosaurs appeared!

You may know them by another name

Scottish spiders are common in North America, but this type of arachnid also occurs in other parts of the world, they have different characteristics, so they can be found under different names.

Terms like „výrobci sena“ or „pastýři“ refer to woven spiders and their scientific name is „Haymakers“.
