The greatest current fear among the majority of people prevails from the possibility of being infected by the unpredictable Covid-19 disease, which has been spreading around the world for several months, while the last weeks have gained considerable intensity.
But did you know that if you are inclined toward a very popular bad habit, you face a higher risk of infection and consequently worse symptoms?
All smokers should now pay close attention. If you are currently enjoying your favorite cigarette, better extinguish it and try to quit this habit. If no risks associated with smoking have convinced you so far, the following scientific evidence might at least help.
“The new coronavirus primarily affects a person’s respiratory tract. Smoking has a major impact on the health of the entire tract,” informs the World Health Organization (WHO). Smokers therefore not only belong to a risk group for Covid-19, but they also face greater health problems after infection.
Because smoking also affects the immune system, people who indulge in it are twice as likely to get the flu, associated with more severe symptoms.
“In the past it has been found that they also have higher mortality,” added the chief expert of the Czech Ministry of Health for addiction medicine, Ľubomír Okruhlica.
Based on studies of patients from China, it was found that among the dead victims, people who had to be put on mechanical lung ventilation, and severe cases there were more smokers than non-smokers. The high risk of coronavirus infection among smokers is also confirmed by Australian experts, who at the same time warn that the risks and consequences, such as severe symptoms or death, also concern electronic cigarette users.
