Autumn is an important season for all gardeners. It’s time to prepare the garden and plants for winter, snow and frost. If you grow geraniums, you need to know the correct procedure for overwintering. Only then will they survive the winter safely and you can look forward to their beautiful flowers that the plants will give you next spring. It very much depends on what you have at home.

Tyrolean geraniums

Overwintering geraniums here is not worthwhile. It is much better to prepare seedlings. In spring you can simply transplant them into a pot and you will have beautiful and healthy plants. They will grow just as well as if you move the old stems to a bright place without frost. Just don’t forget that the plant needs constant watering and a temperature around 10–15 degrees. In spring move them to a sunny and warm place. You will see that they grow very quickly.

Ivy geraniums

If you decide to overwinter these geraniums, you must ensure they get enough light and temperatures above freezing. They are somewhat more sensitive in winter, so you need to keep that in mind. Before you move the geraniums to a safe place, prune the plant so the leaves won’t be ruined during the winter. In winter don’t water too much, but at the same time keep the soil dry. In spring give the plant warmth and light so it regains a beautiful appearance and abundant flowering.

Traditional pelargoniums

How to care for the geraniums that every second household has? Before the frosts arrive stop watering. Remove them from the ground in time and brush the soil away from the roots a little. Don’t cut anything, but remove the diseased parts. Then wrap the stems in newspaper. Simply store the prepared geraniums in the cellar and wait until spring. Then you can transplant them into pots and expect lush flowering. This method is the simplest and most reliable. Your grandmothers probably used it already.
