You buy butter on sale, a great price, but there’s a catch: the shelf life, which is already very short.
This trick is very well known in the countryside, where it is widely used.
The method has proven to be more than excellent and is not really complicated.
Trick to keep butter fresh for up to 3 years
What we’ll need:
- butter
- Clean canning jars (ideally sterilized)
Procedure:
Cutting the butter and placing it into jars
We cut the butter into cubes and place it into the jars. The butter may slightly protrude over the rim of the jars.
Placing the butter on a baking sheet and into a heated oven
We place the jars with butter on a baking sheet and put them into a heated oven at 110 degrees – leave the jars inside for 15-20 minutes.
Heating the butter
As you can see, the butter has melted in the oven, so we can top up the jars again. In the hot butter the solid butter should melt quickly and easily. The butter in the jars should reach about one centimeter below the rim of the jar (I use baby food jars – I prefer to make several smaller jars.
Sealing the heated butter and reheating
Now we close the jars with a lid. Make sure the rim of the jar is clean – it must not be soiled with butter. Put them back into the oven and at a temperature of 110 degrees leave them in the oven for 45 minutes – the butter will separate into two parts: a solid and a liquid part.
Cooling and labeling
We let them cool and check all the containers well once more. On the top of the jars we write the canning date. The butter will last 3 years!
Store in the same place as homemade jams and spreads. Before use, shake well so that both components mix.
