Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a substance that most of us associate primarily with supporting immunity in the autumn and winter months, when droplet infections are rampant. For the human body, vitamin C represents one of the most important nutrients, involved in many proper processes of a range of bodily functions. Besides that, vitamin C can also be used in a completely unconventional way, for example to clean a pool.
Vitamin C and its sources
For the human body, natural vitamin C is especially important, which we can supplement mainly from citrus fruit, but it is also found across a whole spectrum of plants, herbs and vegetables. It benefits both immunity and the cardiovascular and nervous systems, so its deficiency must be addressed by increased intake, which in the absence of natural sources can be provided by dietary supplements. These can take various forms – from capsules and lozenges to effervescent tablets or a powder that can be mixed in water. And it is precisely powdered vitamin C that can be used in areas other than human health.
Cleaning cloudy water in the pool
If you plan to use a pool at home during the summer that you fill from your own water source (a well), it may happen that the water obtained from an outdoor distribution system contains a large amount of iron. Such water will have an unattractive color and unpleasant cloudiness. Given that this cloudiness is formed by iron oxides, vitamin C is an excellent means to remove it. If you pour the optimal amount of vitamin powder into the water, the iron oxides will precipitate with it into a clear and completely water-soluble ferrous ascorbate. It is a salt that is harmless to health, so you can immediately get into and bathe in such treated water. Powdered vitamin C can be obtained not only at a pharmacy but also at a drugstore in fairly large quantities; for a larger pool approximately 200 g will suffice.
