Strawberries – delicious berries that not only have an amazing aroma and taste, but also a whole range of useful properties. They are rich in B-group vitamins, vitamin C, A, PP, pectin, organic acids, fiber, iron, iodine, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, manganese and antioxidants.

How to recognize perfect strawberries?

Strawberries stimulate the removal of salts and excess fluid from the body, eliminate the effects of free radicals, improve brain function, rejuvenate the body and act preventively against cancer. And best of all, they have antidepressant effects!

We make drinks and jams from them, add them to cakes, yogurts or oatmeal. However, we must be on guard! Since they are the first summer berries, stores are filled with goods grown using chemicals. Don’t be fooled and follow the following tips when buying them!

Aroma

The first thing you should immediately focus on when choosing them. Strawberries with a weak aroma are in most cases grown with nitrates.

Color

The natural color of strawberries is bright red with a slightly glossy surface. Strawberries that are too dark, wine-colored may be a sign of artificial coloring. Pale, unripe strawberries should also not be bought in the hope that they will ripen at home. Such strawberries will not ripen and will instead start to rot.

Size and shape

When it comes to shape, there is no strict criterion, because each variety has different sizes and shapes. However, don’t be deceived by overly large strawberries. There is a high probability that these strawberries were pumped with water before being sold. Dimples and dents indicate the beginning of the rotting process.

Stem

You should not store strawberries without the stem; keep those with the stem and leaves. The leaves should be fresh (not dried out), a deep green color. Experts’ trick: if the distance between the leaves and the strawberry is smaller, it guarantees that it will be sweet. If the leaves lie flat against the strawberry, it is likely to be more sour.

Seeds

The farther apart they are from each other, and the more deeply set, the sweeter they will be. That’s all!
