At this time of year, when the frost and fresh snowfall have set in, there is also an increased risk of flu and colds.
To prevent them, or to treat symptoms such as cough, sore throat or sneezing, homemade natural lozenges work very well, and today we will share the recipe with you.
Many people in such cases immediately reach for lozenges from the pharmacy.
Although they can effectively relieve sore throat, they also contain many dangerous ingredients.
Their side effects can therefore cause further discomfort and, moreover, do not address the primary cause of the illness.
Why cough is beneficial for us
Although cough can often be very bothersome, it is an important natural reflex of the body.
It helps expel accumulated mucus from the body, along with pathogenic bacteria, viruses and other impurities that irritate our mucous membranes.
Since we currently live in a relatively polluted environment full of toxins, cough often protects us from harmful particles in the air. In this way it allows us to prevent more serious respiratory illnesses.
Short-term cough therefore helps us significantly.
The problem arises if it lasts too long or when it turns into a chronic cough. That then requires increased attention.
Risks of common cough medicines
Cough medicines should not only suppress it, but also treat its underlying causes.
Some cough lozenges from the pharmacy, however, contain several ingredients that may relieve unpleasant symptoms such as pain or phlegm, but can directly affect heart rate.
These are mainly substances such as pseudoephedrine hydrochloride, dextromethorphan bromide or ephedrine, which suppress cough but also have a number of undesirable side effects.
Their main disadvantage is that they affect the effectiveness of other medications.
Recipe for natural cough lozenges
Our natural cough lozenges are not only tasty, but also contain substances that strengthen the immune system and speed up recovery time from illness.
Ingredients
For their preparation you will need the following ingredients:
- 100 grams of pure honey
- 100 ml coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon (preferably Ceylon)
Preparation
1. If your coconut oil is solid, immerse the bottle in which it is stored in warm water to liquefy it first.
2. Then pour the coconut oil into a bowl or mixer and whip until it becomes a light, airy foam.
3. Gradually, while continuously whipping, add the honey. The whipped mixture should begin to thicken.
4. At the end add the cinnamon and mix everything well once more.
5. Pour the prepared mixture into an ice cube tray. Do not fill the tray to the top, only to one-third or half, so the lozenges are not too thick. Put it in the freezer for an hour.
6. After freezing, remove the lozenges and transfer them to a sealable glass container, which you keep in the refrigerator. Since coconut oil melts at around 24 degrees Celsius, the lozenges should remain solid.
Storage and use
Lozenges made this way will keep in the refrigerator for approximately 2 months.
You can use them in case of illness, but also preventively. Since this is not a pharmaceutical medicine, the amount you can consume is not restricted.
Take them as needed. Usually 1 lozenge every one to two hours until the symptoms subside.
