Five minutes of work, thirty minutes of baking and you can serve a homemade loaf! It’s a great alternative to a trip to the store when you run out of baked goods or simply don’t feel like going out. If you’d like to bake your own bread but are put off by complicated recipes that use sourdough, kneading and other time-consuming steps, this recipe is exactly for you. It takes about 40 minutes and your first loaf will be ready.

No scale? You can measure the ingredients with a glass

This recipe starts with five minutes of work and ends with crispy bread after thirty minutes in the oven. It’s the famous Irish soda bread whose crust is crunchy and golden-brown, yet the crumb is soft, tender and tasty. Are your mouthwatering already? The ingredient quantities are given in two ways, once in the classic way and secondly using a glass for those who don’t have a scale. You will need:

  • 50 dkg plain flour (5 glasses)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 150 g kefir or natural yogurt (2 glasses)
  • 2 dl water (1 glass)

Preparation takes only a few minutes; there’s no lengthy rising or kneading

First preheat your oven to 200 degrees. Then pour all the dry ingredients into a bowl (or into the bowl of a mixer), make a well in the center and pour in the kefir or yogurt and the water. Gently mix all the ingredients until they come together into a soft, non-sticky dough that you can shape into a round loaf. Prepare a baking dish or tray, line it with baking paper and carefully place the shaped loaf onto it. If the dough isn’t smooth enough on the surface, you can use a wet hand to smooth it out. Then score the top several times with a sharp knife — you can even cut out a heart or another ornament. After that you can put the prepared dough into the oven, from which in just thirty minutes you’ll pull out a fragrant, golden-baked loaf. Enjoy!
