The automatic washing machine is a household helper that needs a bit of upkeep, like any other appliance. Unfortunately we often forget about it. Because the washing machine is used to wash and restore the freshness of our clothes, we should probably attach a bit more importance to the condition of our washer. Let’s take a look at how you can keep your washing machine in great shape.
The drum and the removal of dirt and odors
The drum of the automatic washing machine is a place that at first glance always looks fairly clean. However, that might not actually be the case. There are various nooks and crannies that can hide all kinds of dirt. These can be various disease-causing germs that you simply don’t want in your washer. So how do you get rid of dirt that you can’t see at first glance?
The procedure is easy:
- Place 2 dishwasher tablets into the drum
- Run the otherwise empty washing machine at 60°C
Thanks to this procedure you will get rid of dirt that is not visible to the naked eye and at the same time refresh the inside of the washing machine. It will also help if you previously left wet clothes in the washer for a long time, which over time can create an unpleasant smell.
Don’t forget the filter
But of course it’s not only about the drum, but also about many other parts of the washing machine. Many people, for example, forget to clean the filter regularly. This filter should be cleaned approximately every 3 months. Various small objects, or bits of fabric from clothing, different lint clumps, etc., can be caught here. If you don’t clean the filter for a long time, mold can develop there.
How to easily clean the filter?
It is always located in the lower part of the washing machine, most often behind small doors. Press to open the doors and then you have access to the filter, which needs to be unscrewed. We recommend placing a cloth under the washer before this operation and ideally also a very shallow bowl or plate where water can drain. There is always a little water remaining in the filter area.
The seal and the detergent drawer
If anything is forgotten even more than the filter, it’s the seal. On closer inspection you’ll find that dirt also gets trapped there, and that means bacteria as well. So always find a moment to clean it regularly.
Finally, there’s the detergent drawer. You have surely noticed that dirt and various water deposits commonly build up here. Therefore this area needs to be cleaned so these impurities don’t get onto your clothes. For better access you can remove the drawer completely and use an old toothbrush for cleaning.
