Intestinal helminthiasis is not a particularly rare disease, however if we notice the symptoms we prefer not to talk about it. Intestinal worms do not leave our body on their own, we definitely have to do something about them.

Prevalence and life cycle of the pinworm

Every second person becomes infected with pinworms during their lifetime. This parasite lays 5-17 thousand eggs during its life, which are viable for 2-3 weeks. During this time the eggs cause an unpleasant, itchy sensation around the anus. A child is quickly reinfected because they try to relieve the unpleasant itching, even if not consciously, and then by touching the pacifier and putting it in their mouth the infection returns to their body.

Who is most at risk?

Pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis), also known as threadworms, can appear at any age, but are most common in children. Adults have a stronger immune system, but even they are not completely protected. In addition to itching, over time they can also cause abdominal pain or diarrhea, and as a result of malabsorption weight loss may occur.

As a result of intestinal worms we may feel tired, restless and irritable. Pale nail beds and restlessness may also indicate infection. Little girls are at increased risk because they can develop a vaginal infection via the labia minora.

How to detect the presence of intestinal worms?

Diagnosing intestinal worms is not simple. A blood test is not appropriate in this case; rather a sample should be taken from around the anus or from the stool.

Treatment and prevention

If you have intestinal worms, it is recommended to follow your doctor’s instructions and take the prescribed medications, because otherwise you will not get rid of the parasites. At home it is recommended to carry out thorough cleaning and wash fabrics and bedding at 90 degrees to prevent reinfection and the spread of parasites.

Intestinal worms are an unpleasant problem, but with proper treatment and hygiene they can be eliminated. If you notice symptoms, do not hesitate to contact a doctor and follow their recommendations.
