Gas stoves, commonly used in households around the world, can have unexpected and potentially serious effects on health. A new study from the USA brought surprising results showing that the use of gas burners may contribute to the development of asthma, especially in children.
The hidden threat of gas stoves
The study, conducted in the United States, revealed that gas stoves produce combustion byproducts that can negatively affect health, especially of children. According to the research, approximately 650,000 American children might not suffer from asthma if electric or induction stoves were used in homes.
The harmfulness of gas stoves is compared to passive smoking, suggesting that the risks associated with their use are similar to those of passive inhalation of tobacco smoke. Although not all cases of asthma are caused by gas stoves, the study suggests that about 13% of asthma cases may be linked to their use.
Nitrogen dioxide and its impact on health
One of the main problems associated with using gas stoves is the production of nitrogen dioxide, which forms during the combustion of gas. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nitrogen dioxide is a pollutant closely linked to respiratory problems, including asthma. It is important to emphasize that the risk can be significantly reduced by regular ventilation, which helps remove harmful substances from the home environment.
Reaction and the future
Reaction to the study’s results led Richard Trumka, head of US Consumer Product Safety, to state that a proposal to ban gas stoves is being considered. This step could significantly affect the future use of gas stoves in households. However, due to political debates, plans so far lean more toward regulating the sale and installation of new gas stoves rather than a complete ban on existing ones.
What can you do?
If you have a gas stove at home, it is advisable to ensure regular ventilation of your kitchen to reduce the risk of exposure to harmful emissions. Considering a switch to an electric or induction stove can be another step to help protect your family’s health.
