The main function of the liver is to ensure a balanced internal environment of the organism. They are the main detoxification organ in the body and supply the body with minerals, vitamins and iron. Their weight is around 1.5 kg and they are located in the right upper part of the abdomen.
If liver failure occurs, whether due to illness or mechanically (a tear from a severe jolt or impact), it is a life-threatening condition that cannot be reversed except by transplantation. To bridge the period while waiting for a transplant, liver dialysis is performed. Therefore we should pay attention to proper lifestyle and not indulge in alcohol and other addictive substances, which after long-term use leave an indelible mark on all our organs.
How to tell that something is wrong?
There are several indicators by which you can detect improper liver function. At first glance it may seem that they have nothing to do with the liver, but if the symptoms are long-lasting and demonstrably unrelated to your current health condition, it’s better to see a doctor and get checked preventively.
One of the symptoms you may observe is confusion and frequent forgetfulness. This can be caused by the liver’s inability to retain harmful toxins, which then affect brain function. You should also watch for frequent hypoglycemic episodes, which manifest as cold sweat, overall weakness and trembling limbs. They mostly subside after consuming sweets. The liver is responsible for regulating blood sugar in the blood, so if you often notice low blood sugar, a visit to your attending physician should definitely be on the day’s agenda.
Moodiness, or a more serious problem?
Not every day goes according to your expectations, which naturally is reflected in your emotional state. However, if you experience frequent mood swings without an obvious cause, altered toxins that may be harming your brain could be to blame. Related to this are also sudden anxiety attacks and depression, so it is important to perform liver tests before using any antidepressants or sedatives.
Even premenstrual syndrome can be caused by poor liver function, which affects the production of the hormones estrogen and testosterone in the body. In men, this imbalance manifests as decreased libido.
