Filled walnut shells are actually walnut cakes that were once an indispensable addition at weddings and also on Christmas holiday tables. If you feel like this great dessert, you can prepare it following the recipe below.
The cake consists of of dough and filling
For the dough you will need 250 grams of butter, 3 cups of flour, 3 eggs, 1 cup of sugar and 0.5 teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in vinegar. There aren’t many ingredients for the filling:
- 200 g butter
- 1 can of condensed milk
First prepare the condensed milk. Put the unopened can into a pot and fill it with water so that the milk is completely covered. Boil for about an hour, then let it cool and mix it in a mixer with 200 g of butter. The cream prepared this way will be delicious. You can put it in the refrigerator or leave it out at room temperature.
Shape the shells and then join them with the cream
Sift the flour into a bowl and add the butter, which you should cut into cubes. Take the butter out in advance so it reaches room temperature before cutting. Separate the yolks from the whites; mix the yolks with the sugar and whip the whites into stiff peaks.
Finally, mix the ingredients together and add the baking soda with vinegar. Knead the dough thoroughly. Grease the molds a little with oil, add a teaspoon of dough, and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in an oven preheated to 200 degrees for about 7–10 minutes. After cooling, fill the walnut shells with the condensed milk filling and press the „shells“ together.
You can also try recipes for other interesting types of cookies. You can also swap the fillings for the walnuts or try a different type of dough. For unconventional varieties of sweets you can use white wine, candied or stewed fruit. Cupcakes with Nutella cream are interesting; you can further decorate them with chopped nuts, grated chocolate or coconut. Try a new recipe every year and maybe it will become part of your „regular selection“.
