The world’s largest producer of rice is China, which produces more than 200 million tons of rice annually.
However, recently the newspaper The Korean Times published a report about how some Chinese companies manufacture artificial rice from plastics and potato starch, which they then enrich with rice aroma.
They then add such toxic rice to ordinary rice to deceive customers and thus increase their profits.
The report triggered further investigations aimed at uncovering whether the information presented was true or not. The final findings were shocking.
Some Chinese rice contained a relatively large amount of plastics. The question therefore is how to identify whether your rice also contains these harmful additives?
Fortunately, there are differences between natural and artificial rice that will help you spot the artificial kind. We will discuss these in more detail in today’s article.
Test No.1: Water
Take a tablespoon of rice and put it into a bowl of water.
If the rice sinks to the bottom, it is natural. If it remains floating on the surface, it is likely artificial rice.
Test No.2: Fire
Try to light a few grains of rice.
If they do not burn, the rice is real. However, if they start to burn, it indicates that the rice is fake.
Test No.3: Crushing
Crush the rice grains.
If you only get a white powder, it is natural rice. If, besides the powder, you see yellow spots, it is likely artificial rice.
Test No.4: Mold
Cook a handful of rice and place it in a bowl that you leave uncovered in a bright spot in the kitchen for several days.
If mold forms on it after some time, it is real rice. If it does not mold even after a long time, it is probably artificial rice.
Conclusion
The tests listed are simple and easy. We recommend trying several of them at the same time, because a single test may not always reliably determine the result. For example, even real rice grains can sometimes float on the surface.
We hope this article helps protect your health by revealing the origin of the rice you are about to consume.
