Polycystic ovary syndrome is a gynecological disease that is caused by excessive production of  androgens (male sex hormones). The disease usually manifests as increased acne formation, hyperpigmentation, excessive hair loss and the growth of body hair in areas typical for the male sex:

  • chin
  • above the lips
  • back
  • chest

These symptoms are a sign of hormonal imbalance, which often causes the formation of cysts on the ovaries. These cysts are usually not harmful, but they can cause menstrual disorders.

Cause

There are several theories about the origin of this syndrome. A risk factor that could increase the production of male hormones and thus disrupt the ovaries’ ability to ovulate properly is excessive insulin production. Other causes also include heredity. If someone in the family suffers from this syndrome, especially a sister or mother, the risk that you will suffer from it increases. In this case, be sure to have yourself examined by a doctor so you know where you stand.

Treatment

Unfortunately there is no cure for this disease. If a woman with polycystic ovary syndrome wants to become pregnant, a major problem arises. A doctor can prescribe strong hormonal treatment, but the result cannot be guaranteed. If a woman does not wish to have children, doctors can prescribe hormonal contraception, which is able to suppress the physical symptoms caused by the production of androgens.

Early diagnosis can prevent further health complications, for example cardiovascular diseases and type II diabetes.

Healthy diet

The most important thing for women with this syndrome is adjusting their diet and exercising. A sedentary and unhealthy lifestyle worsens this disease. Ideally, include exercise every day for at least one hour. Brisk walks, running, or rollerblading are ideal.

However, if a woman is really strict with herself, strictly follows her diet and gets enough exercise, spontaneous restoration of the menstrual cycle may occur.
