The washing machine is a common part of every household. And an indispensable one: can you imagine cleaning your clothes without it? And not just your own, but the whole family’s? A new washing machine can be quite a significant item in the family budget, so it’s worth taking regular care of it so that it lasts as long as possible – and without repairs. The most common problem with washing machines is a clogged filter. That’s why it’s worth knowing how to clean the washing machine filter.
Be careful with the warranty
A washing machine that is still under warranty will require the filter to be cleaned by a service technician to avoid damaging the machine. Here it is up to you whether you take the risk and clean the filter yourself (and may thus lose the warranty if a much more expensive part of the machine breaks), or call a service technician. That means extra money and time. And households with small children know that even a week without a washing machine can be a terribly long time.
Cleaning the washing machine filter
Filter cleaning can vary depending on the brand and model of each washing machine. But the first step is the same: disconnect the water supply and unplug the washing machine from the electrical outlet. Then you can proceed to the actual filter cleaning. Unscrew the nut of the fill hose and remove the mesh it contains. The mesh can be either in the hose or in the branch pipe leaving the machine. Rinse this mesh under running water. The drain hose may be located in slightly different places. There are usually two options: brands Indesit, Ariston or Samsung have the drain hose behind the lower removable panel; brands Bosch, Electrolux, Zanussi, LG have the drain hose behind a small hatch at the back of the machine.
Removing the filter
Now you can remove the filter from the machine and begin cleaning it. It is removed by turning it counterclockwise. With a heavily clogged filter this can be very difficult, so you may need to use a bit of force. Then remove all debris from the filter.
