In a period that is progressing at an incredibly fast pace, it is important for children to learn humility and to help their parents and possibly their neighbors. Instead of spending the whole day at the computer, they could, for example, wash the dishes or vacuum the apartment. If you offer this work to your children, it is quite possible that you will not be immediately successful. How to teach children to help?
Household chores
Many parents excuse their children for not helping them because they are tired after school. Another portion of parents even feel guilty for having forced their children to do household chores.
Experts’ advice
However, experts say that if you involve children in household work, it will have a positive impact on them.
Household chores have always been considered the responsibility of parents, regardless of how tired they are when they come home. Therefore it is necessary to explain to children how important it is to help. And as the saying goes, what one learns in youth is like finding it in old age.
„If a child does not wash up after themselves, someone else will do it for them. Therefore this exception is not only about responsibility, but also about the fact that every family member should contribute to family life, “said Julie Litcott Heyms in a video for ted.com.
Julie also claims that children who do household tasks from an early age have better work discipline and build their careers more quickly.
Experiment
One of the researchers at the University of Mississippi conducted a 25-year study. During this study he focused on children aged 3–4 who did household tasks, and then studied how it affected them when they were 20 years old.
The result was very surprising. Children who could take care of a pet in childhood were most likely to have made a successful career. In adulthood they even had a stronger sense of empathy.
„As we evolve, we become less and less demanding of our children. We send them to other cities and do not know how to wash laundry, cook food, or change a light bulb.
The reason is the desire to do everything for our children, “said Nicholas Long, director of the Center for Effective Parenting at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
Children should not be slaves to their parents, but helping around the house from time to time or washing the dishes can help them a lot in building their own lives in a few years. Do you agree?
