These fibers are basically a second, underdeveloped peel of the banana. They are companion tissue of the fruit, which grew on the banana plant before you bought it. This tissue serves as an aid in photosynthesis; in bananas it is almost a “umbilical cord” that connects the fruit to the plant. Thanks to these thin hairs each fruit develops well and grows until it matures.
Can these fibers be eaten?
Your first thought will surely be whether these fibers are edible or if you should separate them from the banana and throw them away with the peel. Rest assured, these thin strings are harmless and do not affect the quality of the banana at all. So you can calmly eat the fibers along with the banana. Thanks to them you will provide your body with even more nutrients, minerals and vitamins. Some studies state that these tissues contain much more nutrients than the whole banana.
