Hot summer weather, closed footwear in which feet sweat, and immediately we have a very unpleasant situation where you’re afraid to take your shoes off anywhere but at home. Have you found yourself in this situation? Smelly shoes are a nuisance that almost every one of us has surely experienced.

It’s hard to get rid of shoe odor; you can use various sprays, which, however, usually only mask the smell temporarily and after a while of wearing the “aroma” from the shoes can become even stronger. Another solution could be washing them, but not all shoes can be put in the washing machine, as they could be irreparably damaged. However, we have several tips for you on how to tackle that annoying odor!

Socks on the feet

The worst thing you can do is not wear socks with closed shoes. Feet sweat more without them, and bacteria that cause the odor begin to multiply. Not to mention that various fungal infections can also occur this way.

If you also give your feet a regular soak, they will thank you. Suitable additions to the soak include, for example:

  • apple cider vinegar
  • chamomile
  • sage
  • tea tree oil.

You can, however, also use other options; today’s market offers a vast number of foot care products. It’s also important to rotate your footwear regularly, don’t forget that!

Freezer

Stuff crumpled newspaper into the inside of the shoes, put them into a plastic bag and then into the freezer for 24 hours. The low temperature will kill the bacteria that cause the annoying odor. Newspapers or other paper are important for absorbing moisture.

Baby powder

Pour baby powder into the shoes; it excellently absorbs excess moisture and removes odor. You can use baking soda in the same way. Shake out the shoes before putting them on.

Other methods

Other options that help remove odor are:

  • coffee
  • cinnamon
  • cat litter (preferably scented)
  • tea

All these options have the same method of use. Simply pour coffee, cinnamon, or cat litter into an old sock and place it into the smelly shoes. For tea, just place one bag into each shoe. You can improve this method by adding a few drops of essential oil to the sock.
