Did you come home and your shoes are completely soaked? If you have time to let them dry, nothing bad happens. Natural drying does not harm shoes. However, a situation may occur when you will have to go out again shortly, and walking in wet shoes is not good for them, and certainly not for your feet. You can catch a fungus, your skin may crack, you may damage your nails, and in the end you may ruin the shoes so that you will have to throw them away. And none of us wants that.
First thing to do
As soon as you get home, immediately remove the insoles from the shoes and loosen the laces so the shoe can breathe and the absorbed moisture can start to evaporate. The moisture that comes from the shoes to the surface can be removed with paper. Newspapers are best. Separate the individual sheets of newspaper, crumple them, and stuff them into the shoes. Newspaper paper absorbs very well and will help reduce moisture very quickly.
Additional supportive measures
To speed everything up, you can replace the newspaper. When they remain dry, keep the newspapers inside the shoes. Heat also helps. Forget hair dryers or other hot-air blowers. High, dry heat can damage your shoes just like water. Heat acts only from one side, causing great stress in the material. That can, due to the temperature difference, cause cracking or tearing. It is appropriate to place the shoes on a cloth or paper and position them close to a heat source. Radiators are ideal. Place the shoes under them. Drying will be slower, but it will not harm the shoes. Do not put the shoes on a stove or on a red-hot radiator. Now remove the newspapers from the shoes to facilitate air circulation and speed up drying.
What to do in the end.
Such accelerated drying can harm them, especially when they are leather. When the shoes are dry, it is appropriate to treat them. Use an impregnation against moisture, which you can buy for the shoes. It is enough to spray once over the entire surface and let it dry. If you do not use such products, the manufacturer recommends a different product for each material. For leather it is oil; in the past Indulona or other fats were widely used. For synthetic materials there are fabrics specifically intended for them. We recommend purchasing them for your shoes. And so that you can let your shoes dry nicely and slowly, it’s not a bad idea to have at least one spare pair in reserve. Feel free to have more. The manufacturer also recommends not wearing the same pair of shoes all the time, but rotating several pairs.
