People have used this herb since ancient times as an excellent natural remedy. It contains a lot of calcium, beta-carotene, vitamin K, as well as vitamin C and other healing compounds.

Some of its medicinal properties include: antimicrobial, astringent, antihistamine, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, diuretic and hemostatic.

The plant we’re talking about is called plantain. In our country the ribwort plantain is better known for treatment, however the common broadleaf plantain (in the introductory picture) also has excellent medicinal properties.

How to use plantain

You can consume its leaves directly or add them to various salads.

Since plantain has anti-inflammatory effects, it is an excellent means of reducing pain and itching resulting from various skin conditions.

Plantain leaves are excellent for minor skin injuries, insect bites, ulcers, rashes and other skin irritations.

In the form of tea, tincture or syrup it is suitable for coughs and bronchial inflammations.

Treating respiratory problems with plantain

In Bulgaria 2 clinical studies were conducted. They documented that plantain is highly effective for chronic bronchitis.

This herb acts as a strong expectorant – similar to glycerin or pectin, which are common ingredients in most cough drops and syrups.

The substances contained in plantain relieve irritation and discomfort by creating a protective coating around the affected mucous membranes.

Supporting healthy bones, vision and immunity

Plantain leaves contain a high amount of vitamin C. We all know that this vitamin is key for the optimal function of the immune system.

Additionally, its leaves have a high content of vitamin A (or rather its precursor beta-carotene). This is important for eye health and prevents age-related macular degeneration, which is a common cause of blindness.

The content of calcium, magnesium and vitamin K also contributes to the prevention of osteoporosis.

However, plantain is effective for many other conditions besides those mentioned above.

In the book American Materia Medica, Therapeutics and Pharmacognosy by Dr. Finley Ellingwood from 1919 it is written that it can help with conditions such as all skin problems and snake bites, blood disorders, injuries, infectious diseases, women’s troubles and mercury poisoning.

According to the Life Advancer portal, plantain is a panacea for our body and can cure everything from digestive problems, through menstrual cramps and skin problems, all the way to arthritis and rheumatic pain.

You will need the following ingredients:

  • 2 teaspoons of fresh or 1 teaspoon of dried mixture of plantain root, leaves and seeds
