Dog rose is the most common wild-growing species of the rose genus in Central Europe. It grows wild, but having it nearby is definitely worthwhile. In spring and early summer it delights us with its white and pink flowers that smell wonderful, and in autumn it gifts us with brightly red to red‑orange rosehips.

Rosehips – nature’s treasure

Rosehips are not only a decoration of nature, but also a valuable natural remedy. They are rich in vitamin C, as well as vitamins B1, B2, E and K, flavonoids, carotenoids, tannins and other beneficial substances. Thanks to these compounds, rosehips are an excellent means to strengthen immunity, act as a strong antioxidant and help prevent disease.

Vitamin B1 contained in rosehips has a beneficial effect on the nervous system and concentration, rutin protects blood vessels, calcium strengthens bones and teeth, and iron positively influences blood formation.

Rosehips are not only an effective prevention for colds and flu, but are also excellent for problems with varicose veins and periodontitis, ranking among the best natural remedies for this unpleasant condition. In addition, they can help with menstrual problems and have a positive effect on libido and potency.

If you want to get to know rosehips in a somewhat unconventional way, try preparing a rosehip liqueur that will invigorate and strengthen you.

Preparation of rosehip liqueur

Preparing rosehip liqueur is not demanding, neither in terms of procedure nor ingredients. This liqueur will not only help strengthen your immunity but will also pleasantly warm you.

You will need:

  • 200 g rosehips
  • 300 ml clear high‑proof alcohol (plum brandy, pear brandy, apricot brandy, or vodka)
  • 5 tablespoons sugar
  • 5 tablespoons water

Method:

  1. Collect the rosehips in a clean environment, far from roads and polluted areas. After harvesting, wash them thoroughly, remove the stems and the ragged end, and then either blend them or cut them open and scoop out the seeds.
  2. Place the prepared rosehips in a clean sealable container, pour in the alcohol and let macerate for 2 weeks, or cold‑infuse. Shake the container every day.
  3. After 2 weeks, strain the contents through cheesecloth or a cloth to remove rosehip residue.
  4. In a saucepan prepare a solution of sugar and water. Once the sugar is completely dissolved, add the rosehip macerate and stir.
  5. Pour the liqueur into a sealable glass bottle and let it age for at least a week.

How to use the rosehip liqueur?

Take the rosehip liqueur by the teaspoon as needed. Due to its alcohol content it is not suitable for children and pregnant women, but for others it is great for supplementing vitamin C, boosting immunity and overall revitalization of the body. This liqueur can be an excellent means of strengthening your health during the colder months, when the immune system is most at risk.
