Headaches, back and joint pain are very unpleasant and can prevent you from performing everyday activities and drain your energy. Their causes can be various – traumatic or hormonal – however pain can also occur as a consequence of a deficiency of necessary substances. In this case it is primarily vitamin D, which is important not only for the health of teeth and bones, but also for the metabolism of cortisol, whose deficiency manifests precisely as joint pain. Besides vitamin D deficiency, various pains can also be caused by low levels of other vitamins. So before you start to panic, first try to replenish the necessary nutrients, either through an appropriate diet or dietary supplements.

Pain caused by vitamin deficiencies

A very important nutrient that can cause pain is primarily the already mentioned vitamin D. In addition to it, painful conditions can also be caused by B-group vitamins.

Vitamin D deficiency

As already mentioned, headaches, back or joint pain may appear as a result of vitamin D deficiency, which is an essential part of the metabolic processes that take place in the body. Besides affecting cortisol secretion, it also concerns insomnia, which can result in continuous headaches or migraines. This problem is mainly linked to psychological issues – depression, which people often address with antidepressants. These, however, reduce vitamin D levels and at the same time increase serotonin levels, which interfere with sleep. If depression occurs in young mothers who have no possibility to get vitamin D from sunlight, postpartum depression can develop in them due to lack of sleep.

Deficiency of B-group vitamins

Some B-group vitamins affect painful conditions. These are primarily vitamins B5, B6 and B12, whose deficiency in combination with low vitamin D levels causes back pain.

How to deal with pains caused by hypovitaminosis

Since the aforementioned pains and depressive states are primarily caused by vitamin D deficiency, it is good to supplement it appropriately. Primarily, health can be supported by spending time in the sun or by taking suitable dietary supplements that will replenish its level in the body. If you suffer from a significant deficiency, it is recommended to spend 2-4 hours a day in the sun, or replace it with mountain sunshine. For headaches it is also necessary to supplement magnesium; alternatively, you can try adding sunflower seeds to your diet.
