We received the recipe for this salad from our Russian friends, who cannot imagine any family celebration or New Year’s Eve without it. They described it with such enthusiasm that we made it the same day we received the recipe, and we had to admit they were right. The salad is truly wonderful and we already know it will become a staple on our family menu.
The secret of this salad is the Bulgarian pepper, which is a hot variety of pepper whose fruits have an elongated pendant shape and, when ripe, have a pleasant yellow color. You can easily grow this pepper at home as well, because it is not demanding and, for example, also does well in a larger flowerpot. Of course, if you cannot obtain Bulgarian peppers specifically for the salad, another spicier variety will do. It is no coincidence that „Holiday in Berlin“ is among the salads more popular with men.
Required ingredients
To prepare this flavorful and spicy salad you will need the following ingredients:
- Fresh green cucumber – 1 pc
- Bulgarian pepper (or another spicier variety) – 1 pc
- Whole eggs – 2 pcs
- A block of hard cheese (you can use several types)
- Quality ham, whole
- Mayonnaise
- Salt
- Pepper
- Lemon juice or lime juice
Preparation method
Preparing the salad is very simple. First, boil the eggs until hard, let them cool, and then peel them. Cut off the top of the pepper with the stem and remove the seeds and ribs from the inside. Rinse the cleaned pepper under running water.
Cut the pepper, green cucumber, eggs, and ham into small cubes and place them in a bowl. Grate the hard cheese coarsely. If you have several types of hard cheese, for example Edam, Gouda, Cheddar, and Parmesan, use them to give the salad a richer and fuller flavor.
Add salt and pepper to the mixture of vegetables and cheese to taste, splash it with a little fresh lemon juice or lime juice, and gently stir in the mayonnaise. The salad is ready, but we recommend refrigerating it for at least a few hours before serving, preferably overnight. You can serve it, for example, with whole-grain bread.
