Although in recent years the popularity of carpets has declined and more and more modern households prefer bare floors and perhaps underfloor heating, it still holds true that nothing compares to the feeling of being able to walk on a soft carpet. At least smaller rugs are therefore sooner or later purchased by most people for next to the bed or the sofa. And if you also have small children, a carpet is almost a necessity – you don’t want them to be cold on a chilly floor.
The problem arises, however, when children or a pet soil the carpet. Professional cleaning is quite expensive and doing it at home often looks like a real disaster that ends with throwing the carpet away – or does it?
We offer several tips on how to reliably and gently clean carpets. You will get rid of not only stains but also unpleasant odors. You can use:
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Tea
Baking soda and salt
Salt and baking soda are your first helpers that will help refresh the carpet and remove odors and accumulated dirt. Mix salt and baking soda in a 1:1 ratio and sprinkle this mixture over the entire carpet. Let the mixture sit on the carpet for up to half an hour and then vacuum it up. Both ingredients will pull out everything that doesn’t belong in the carpet, while avoiding soaking it or using chemicals.
Vinegar solution
For some types or materials of carpets it is more appropriate to use a vinegar solution. Before applying it, remember to vacuum the carpet thoroughly to remove dust. Then dip a soft brush or sponge in vinegar and gently scrub the stain with it or work across the surface of the whole carpet. It is not recommended to use a vinegar solution on solid-color carpets, as it could easily create spots of different color. Wait twenty minutes and then wipe the carpet with a dry cloth. Make sure the carpet is completely dry, and remember to ventilate the room well so you don’t inhale vinegar fumes.
Tea
Did you know that tea also works against dirt on a carpet? However, this method is not suitable for very light-colored carpets. Prepare tea bags, but they should not be too wet, so squeeze them thoroughly before placing them on the carpet. Then place the tea bags on areas that are dirty or stained. Leave the bags there until they are completely dry and then remove them. The spot will be clean and also pleasantly scented.
Now you know how to clean a carpet easily and effectively. It’s up to you which method you choose. They are all proven.
