People with blood group A are significantly more susceptible to infection with the new coronavirus than people with blood group O.
This is the result of a study carried out by Chinese scientists on more than 2,000 residents of the 11-million city of Wuhan who were infected with the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.
What the Chinese scientists found
Chinese scientists collected data on a total of 2173 people who tested positive for the new coronavirus, including 206 people who died of COVID-19, in three large hospitals in the hardest-hit Hubei province. The data were then compared with 3694 people from the same area who were not infected.
Of the 206 patients who died of COVID-19, 85 had blood group A (41%). In the healthy population of Wuhan, however, the same blood group is present in 32.16% of people.
In the studied group a total of 52 deceased – that is a quarter – had blood group O. In the healthy population of the examined region in central China, people with this group occur at 33.84%.
