Many novice gardeners may be unsure how to care for tomatoes during the flowering period. Essentially, however, you only need to remember these few basic rules.
1. During this period small green protrusions appear at the base of the stem which are root buds. When their color darkens to blue-purple, cover them with soil.
This procedure contributes to the development of additional roots, through which the plant receives more nutrients and grows better.
2. Loosen the soil around tomato bushes at least once a week if it is not covered with mulch. You can cover it, for example, with mowed grass: mulching helps keep the soil moist and well-aerated for a long time.
3. If the weather is very hot, water tomatoes well every 3 days. If the weather is cooler and more humid, water them once every 4 – 5 days. Do not overwater them, however, and make sure that water does not stand around the roots.
4. If you grow tomatoes in a greenhouse, ventilate the space as often as possible. Tomatoes do not like humid air.
5. Tomatoes are self-pollinating crops. Therefore, if you grow them in a greenhouse where insect access is limited, gently shake them every morning so that pollen from the upper flowers falls onto the lower ones. This helps ensure that as many flowers as possible turn into fruit.
6. All nitrogenous fertilizers, as well as milk and yeast, are beneficial during the vegetative growth period and flowering. Fertilize tomatoes once a week, but do not overdo it: it is better to add less fertilizer than too much.
7. The lower leaves of tomato bushes that touch the ground should be trimmed. They should be removed gradually every 2 – 3 weeks.
This practice helps reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
8. Also remember to prune secondary shoots that do not bear flowers so that all nutrients are directed toward the growth and development of the fruits.
9. When tomato bushes are tall enough, tie the stems to supports or stakes so they do not bend under the weight of leaves and fruit.
10. If any spots appear on the leaves, remove them immediately.
During the flowering period, carry out 2 treatments with an anti-fungal solution – apply it to the leaves.
We believe these tips will help you and we wish you a bountiful harvest!
