Lemons are among the healthiest fruits on the planet. Thanks to their countless health benefits and unique flavor they are added to many dishes.

They are excellent, for example, for detoxifying the body. The problem, however, is that when juicing they lose several of their nutrients with unique healing properties.

A large amount of these substances is located in the peel and pulp and when they are pressed they do not pass into the juice. Freezing them, then grating them and consuming them in this form is therefore better.

What the substances present in lemon peel can do to the body

The substances contained in lemon peel have the following effects on the body:

  • strengthen the immune system
  • regulate cholesterol
  • prevent cancer
  • treat cancer
  • suppress bacterial infections
  • lower blood sugar and treat diabetes
  • destroy parasites

In addition, it has been shown that lemon bioflavonoids and essential oils prevent the development of asthma, suppress inflammation in the body and detoxify the liver and kidneys.

They also positively affect the reduction of high blood pressure and even alleviate or completely eliminate stress and depression.

While lemon juice is known for containing a high proportion of vitamin C, its peel is even much richer in vitamins — by 5 to 10 times!

Lemons and cancer

Decades ago, scientists examined the effect of whole lemons on cancer.

They found that they can very effectively eliminate malignant cells of several types of cancer, including lung, breast and colon cancer.

And the best thing about them is that, unlike such chemotherapy, they target only cancer cells while not harming healthy ones.

According to Dr. Marilyn Glenville, a nutritional advisor and expert in women’s health, the peel of citrus fruits significantly strengthens the immune system and overall health.

She also claims that smoothies (made by blending the whole fruit, including the peel) are healthier than classic squeezed juice, because the peel contains substantially more beneficial substances.

How to consume lemons?

It’s best to get organic, unsprayed lemons.

If you cannot find such, you must wash them well in lukewarm water. Ideally add vinegar to it and scrub them well to remove all pesticides from the peel. Then dry them with a cloth.

Since lemon peel is quite bitter, consume them by first freezing them and then grating the whole fruit, including the pulp, seeds and peel.

Add these grated lemons to meals, smoothies, tea, baked goods, desserts, salads, soups or other dishes.
