Experts from around the world are joining forces with the aim of achieving a single goal – to help eliminate the catastrophic impacts of the new coronavirus pandemic. The latest study concerning the most common symptoms in severe cases of Covid-19 could become an effective aid for both doctors and patients.
What scientists say
While at first there was much talk that the respiratory illness particularly affects seniors, in recent days cases of complicated infection among children and adolescents have been increasing. American scientists therefore participated in research on a sample of patients for whom the coronavirus had serious to fatal consequences.
Doctors should be on alert for several specific symptoms when hospitalizing an infected person. People facing advanced Covid-19 complained from the first days about severe muscle and joint pain. A significant percentage of those hospitalized, whose treatment required mechanical ventilation, reported myalgia as one of the main and unbearable symptoms.
Another notable indicator proved to be a slight increase in levels of the liver enzyme alanine aminotransferase (ALT).
ALT is located inside liver cells, but when the organ is damaged its level increases in the bloodstream.
People with unhealthy livers can therefore easily be put at risk, including from pneumonia.
The third indicator is the number of days, because it was found that in people infected with the coronavirus symptoms worsened at the latest within 5 to 8 days from the onset of illness. Generally, if you get through the first week without more serious effects, a Covid-19 diagnosis should not have fatal consequences for you. In case of any doubts, however, it is always more reliable to consult your health condition directly with a doctor!
