Growing vegetables doesn’t have to be only for those who have an outdoor garden. You can also grow some varieties at home on a windowsill or on a balcony. You can use, for example, plastic bottles for this, into which you can plant not only cucumbers, but also tomatoes or even strawberries. After that, it only depends on whether you can take proper care of the vegetables.
You can harvest your crop throughout the autumn
If you want to grow cucumbers in home conditions, you can do it in plastic bottles. We’ll show you the process step by step and thanks to simple cultivation you can harvest your own vegetables and also give them to others. Prepare:
- Plastic bottles
- Pliers
- Steel cable
- Soil
- Marker
- Gravel
First wash the bottles, remove the labels and the glue. You can then label the bottles with a marker or buy stickers on which you write the planting date and which vegetable is currently in that bottle. Using the marker, mark where the hole will be and cut a rectangle out of the plastic bottle.
You can also hang the plastic bottles. In that case it is necessary to create an opening through which you thread a metal wire and then hang them. Be careful that the cucumbers are not too heavy; plastic bottles can easily tear off. Make several punctures for two bottles and cover the bottom with gravel. If you will have them hanging, get a pallet.
You can also grow herbs in bottles
Plants that have short roots can be planted into bottles. For example, you can plant garlic, which is very easy to grow. You can also plant lettuce; if you give it regular watering, you can enjoy it every day. It is necessary to provide drainage in the pot so that excess water can drain away and remember that they will grow a lot in width, so a large bottle is needed.
The vegetables will grow within three weeks of planting. In plastic bottles you can grow the aforementioned strawberries. There are several varieties that have started to be grown on balconies and terraces; all they need is enough water, light and quality soil. When you grow them like this at home you reduce the risk of pest infestation and you won’t have to spray them, so they will be completely natural.
Prepare the soil for cucumbers beforehand
Be careful to always put the correct amount of seeds into the plastic bottles. If the roots of the plants do not have enough space, the crop will fail and you’ll be left in tears. You can grow fresh cucumbers at home; just prepare a porous soil that you buy in the store. Use large bottles for cucumbers, preferably 5 liters. Fill part of the container with soil and insert the seeds. When caring for cucumbers, keep in mind they need the same amount of water, moisture and warmth as greenhouse cucumbers.
Thanks to our method you can enjoy your own garden that you can make in a small space on a balcony. Whenever you feel like it, you can pick strawberries, cucumbers and tomatoes; in small bottles you can plant herbs that are suitable for sauces, soups or salads.
