Does every morning of yours start with a cup of excellent hot coffee? That’s fine, coffee contains many antioxidants that neutralize free radicals that cause premature aging. It also strengthens the cardiovascular system, and what many may not know – it reduces the risk of developing cancer. So drinking coffee is fine, but experts warn that it should definitely not be your only breakfast.
Risks of drinking coffee on an empty stomach
One of the undesirable effects of coffee on your body is increasing the level of cortisol (the so‑called stress hormone), so it is advisable to drink it at times when the level of this hormone is lowest, which is usually around ten o’clock in the morning and four o’clock in the afternoon. Because of cortisol your body is primed in stressful situations and, conversely, conserves energy during a cold. In these stressful states it raises blood sugar levels and blood pressure, which can be a big problem for diabetics, pregnant women and people with heart disease.
Coffee also has a negative effect directly on your stomach if it is empty
It increases the production of stomach acids, which in the long term can lead to stomach ulcers and even to inflammation of the stomach (gastritis). Not to mention unpleasant bloating and possible nausea.
How to eliminate these negative effects?
If you can’t bring yourself to eat something small before a cup of coffee, at least try to increase its nutritional value by adding coconut milk or cinnamon. Coconut milk has a beneficial effect on the whole body, helps with detoxification and excess stomach acidity. Cinnamon is known for its calming effects, and it also lowers cholesterol, regulates blood sugar levels, strengthens the immune system and positively affects digestion. As a bonus it will unusually flavor and enliven your morning coffee.
