Apple compote is a great way to preserve fresh apples for a long time. This traditional grandmother’s recipe is simple, does not require complicated ingredients and the result is a delicious compote that you can enjoy even out of season.

Ingredients for apple compote

  • 2 kg of apples

  • juice from half a lemon

  • 1 tablespoon of sugar for each glass jar

  • drinking water as needed

Preparation

1. Preparing the apples

Wash the apples well and cut them into small pieces. If you want, you can peel them, but it’s not necessary. Add a few drops of lemon juice to a bowl of water so the apples don’t brown. Let them sit in this water for 5 minutes.

2. Filling the jars

Prepare 3 glass jars with a capacity of 500 ml. Fill each jar with pieces of apples and add 1 tablespoon of sugar. Top up with drinking water, but leave a little space at the top of the jar.

3. Sterilization and preservation

Seal the jars tightly with new, clean lids. Gently shake so the sugar dissolves. Then sterilize for 15 minutes from the point of boiling. After sterilization, let the jars sit in the water for 2–3 hours.

4. How to store the compote

Store the apple compote in a cool, dark place. Apples prepared this way will stay fresh for months and retain their natural taste and aroma.
