Anyone who wears glasses knows that buying them isn’t exactly cheap. When the lenses get scratched, it can be very annoying. For the average glasses wearer, a scratch on the lenses can be as irritating as a speck in the eye. It’s natural to want to solve this problem as quickly as possible. However, before you resort to radical solutions, gently clean the lenses with a microfiber cloth made for glasses. Use minimal pressure and a glasses cleaner or soap and water. If the damage persists, try one of our tips.
Why are glasses so prone to scratching?
If you feel your glasses get scratched no matter what you do, you’re not alone. There are several reasons they are prone to scratching. Most lenses are not glass. Modern glasses are made from sophisticated plastic. Plastic is also safer than glass so it can be worn close to the eyes, because there is a small risk of cracking or breaking. However, it tends to scratch easily. Dirt on the lenses or rough fabrics used for cleaning can also cause scratches. Therefore always clean glasses only with products intended for that purpose and avoid wiping and polishing them on the clothing you’re wearing.
To buff out scratches try baking soda or toothpaste
If you’ve already managed to scratch your lenses, you can try to repair them yourself. Tried-and-true remedies are baking soda and toothpaste.
- Mix baking soda with a little water until you obtain a paste.
- Gently apply to the lenses and buff.
- Rinse with water.
Scratches can also be eliminated by using a non-abrasive toothpaste. The procedure is the same as when using baking soda. Using car wax is also recommended. It can fill in and remove scratches on the lenses. Apply with a soft clean cloth and gently rub until the scratches are removed. Caution: Never use any abrasive solution on the glass, otherwise you risk serious damage to the lenses.
