Cucumbers are a very popular vegetable that Czechs grow in their gardens. Many of them no longer know how they should fertilize cucumbers so that they provide their growers with high yields of healthy and tasty cucumbers. Many people buy universal commercial fertilizers that may contain substances that should under no circumstances come into contact with cucumbers. What substances are these, and what should you avoid fertilizing cucumbers with?
Horse manure
Horse manure is one of the most popular fertilizers used in gardens. It is used as a universal fertilizer suitable for ornamental plants, fruit, vegetables and herbs. Perhaps that’s exactly why it may surprise you that cucumbers are among the very few plants that do not like horse manure. Therefore you should keep them in mind and rather not feed them with this fertilizer. It contains a large amount of ammonia, which is a substance cucumbers really do not like. So if you fertilized with horse manure and your cucumbers did not do well last year, this is probably the reason. Choose a different fertilizer for cucumbers and you will see that they will flourish this year.
Iodine solution
Iodine solution is one of the many components found in most industrially produced fertilizers. Iodine solution is often prescribed to plants. Its application to the substrate protects plants from various types of pests. However, if you spray the soil with an iodine solution for cucumbers, you will not be pleased with the result. It is true that you will get rid of all pests and parasites—that is where the iodine solution helps cucumbers. But a problem will occur inside the cucumber fruits and after harvesting you will find that the fruits of all the cucumbers have turned bitter and are therefore inedible. So iodine solution is not a suitable fertilizer for cucumbers either.
Proper fertilization
Even if you eliminate all these inappropriate substances, you will find that there are still a large number of fertilizers that can be used. You can choose from industrial fertilizers as well as natural ones. Many suitable substances can be found in your kitchen, or you can look for another type of manure—avoid horse manure and opt, for example, for cow or chicken manure.
