The approaching cold season is relentless and you are probably already feeling a bit cold at home. The heating season is certainly starting, and there is nothing left but to turn the heat on and try to implement solutions that will retain heat and thus make heating more economical. Let’s look at a few ideas that will keep your home warm. All are quick, easy, and save energy.

- Cook homemade meals and let the oven cool with the door open
Focus on efficient heating
Have you decided to turn on the radiators in your home? Great, just make sure you are heating the room, not the wall behind it. Take a piece of aluminum foil and place it behind the radiators. This way the heat will radiate into the room instead of warm air flowing into the wall. The air will heat up faster and the room will retain heat better. Also make sure the pipes are properly insulated. The water running through them heats more efficiently.
Check radiators and avoid drafts
When you start heating, it’s good to check all the radiators in the house so you don’t spend unnecessarily and aren’t cold at home. Feel the radiators and check whether they are equally warm at the top and bottom. If they don’t heat evenly, there is probably air trapped in the system that should be bled out with the bleed valve to make heating more effective.
If you feel air escaping through gaps around windows and doors, spend some money on insulating rubber or film and the heat will no longer be able to escape. Be careful and very cautious when applying it. When heating and winter comes, you spend much more than is strictly necessary to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home. And that’s certainly not what you want.
Textiles are a great method
It will surely not surprise you that most heat from houses and apartments escapes through windows. Before the sun fully sets, draw the curtains or blinds to keep more heat inside. There are also thermal insulating curtains that are sold commercially and privately. Moreover, they aren’t that expensive, so anyone can afford them.
Heat can also escape through the floor, especially if you have a basement
If you don’t have them yet, cover the floor with thick rugs. If you’re not at home year-round, remember to place rugs in a few spots in the house during the winter. They help keep rooms warm.
