Do you grow beets and carrots but can’t achieve a rich and sweet flavor? Or are you actually worried about growing them for this reason? There’s no need — with these tips even a complete beginner can manage to grow them. Carrots and beets can be used in the kitchen in hundreds of ways, and they are very healthy, so don’t be afraid to grow them. In the first place, keep in mind that applying organic fertilizers is not very good for their growth. If you add manure to the soil, the vegetables will have an unpleasant taste and strange shapes and colors.
They prefer a sunny spot
Grow beets and carrots ideally in an open area and in a sufficiently sunny spot. A great choice is a place where cucumbers, peas, onions, or early potatoes previously grew. Before planting, don’t forget to use fertilizer. The soil should have a neutral pH and in autumn it is ideal to mix the top layer of soil in the area with lime.
From June to August regularly fertilize the vegetables with ammonium nitrate. Add about 40 g of fertilizer to a watering can with water and stir thoroughly, then water the vegetables generously. After fertilizing, it is necessary to water the carrots and beets again with plain water. In August add a teaspoon of manganese and boron to the water or to the fertilizer. Again, after each fertilization pour plain water over the plants.
Fertilize with ash or salt
Ash also contains many important nutrients, which you can sprinkle over the soil in the growing area. One hundred grams per square meter is enough and lightly work it into the soil together with water. Fertilize the beet three times during growth with table salt. Use one tablespoon of salt per ten liters of water; the beet will then be sweeter.
Carrots will benefit from boric acid. Use one teaspoon of the acid per liter of hot water, mix thoroughly and let cool. Carefully pour the solution into a container and water the carrots with it, or spray with a sprayer. If you notice that the carrot has too bitter a taste, work tobacco between the rows. It will be sweeter and more pleasant in flavor.
