Bottled drinking water is the modern ruler when it comes to drinking liquids. Yes, it’s possible that tap water is not as tasty as bottled water, but don’t assume it’s also healthier.
We offer you several reasons why it’s better not to buy water in plastic bottles (or at least to reduce your purchases):
Plastic bottles can leach chemicals
Plastic bottles become much softer if they spend some time in the sun. Plastics begin to slowly melt under the influence of sunlight. And now think about how much dirt gets into the water you drink.
Chemicals in plastic products can contaminate the contents that we then consume.
One of the dangerous substances is BPA (Bisphenol) — a chemical used in the production of plastics that behaves like a hormone and can affect brain development in infants. Even plastics that do not contain this chemical are not that safe.
Bottled water comes from the tap
You’ve probably seen many ads claiming the water comes from the purest sources that support human health. But is that really so?
You may be surprised to learn that up to 25% of water sold in bottles comes from a regular tap. So your water doesn’t come from any unimaginable oases of calm and untouched nature.
Pure spring water that allegedly comes from some mountain stream is just advertising to maintain the brand’s popularity. Nothing more.
Bottled water can be more dangerous than tap water
Water from the municipal supply must meet all standards, but that doesn’t apply to bottled water.
Insufficient monitoring of bottled water can make it less safe. Such water most likely contains more harmful substances than tap water.
The positive reputation of bottled waters’ purity is only an illusion. In reality you have no idea how it was processed and what all may be in it.
It has no proven benefits
Many people question the quality of tap water and prefer PET bottles instead. If you are among those who think bottled water is healthier, you are most likely gravely mistaken.
Researchers have found no evidence confirming benefits of bottled water. In other words, bottled water offers no benefit to our bodies, aside from quenching thirst.
Production of plastic bottles destroys the environment
The manufacture of plastic bottles is something that represents a huge problem for us and our environment.
According to the Pacific Institute, the high demand for plastic water bottles means we use more than 17 million barrels of oil each year. Now ask yourself, is it worth it?
Plastic bottle landfills
Manufacturing water bottles is just the beginning of a catastrophic scenario.
Every year the number of landfills containing plastic bottles increases. Not all are processed, only about 1 in 5 PET bottles can be recycled. The rest simply pollutes our planet. For reference: one plastic bottle takes 450 years to decompose.
Bottled water is not cheap
Most of us have tap water available. We don’t have to go anywhere for it because it’s right under our nose. When it comes to finances, just compare how much money you spend on regular purchases of bottled water and how much you spend from the tap. The difference is worth it!
A huge amount of water is needed to produce plastic bottles
It may sound a bit strange, but producing the bottles themselves requires a lot of water. In fact, this process requires more water than can be poured into a single bottle!
This means that to make one bottle we need approximately 6–7 bottles’ worth of water. As you can see, it’s much easier to pour water from the tap and at the same time conserve drinking water supplies.
Tap water is safe
Before water enters every municipal tap, it must go through dozens of inspections and tests. This makes it possible to consider it a safer option.
And which water do you prefer?
