We’ve all been taught since childhood that everything should be thoroughly washed before cooking, but few people know that there are foods you definitely should not rinse. Washing certain foods promotes the spread of bacteria.

Never wash!

You should never wash these foods with water. See why.

Eggs

A special substance is often applied to eggs because it protects the eggs from bacterial contamination. Water destroys this protection, so you should not cook the eggs.

Chicken

Bacteria on fresh chicken are very dangerous to our health. The best known of all is salmonellosis. Many people think that washing the chicken before cooking helps solve this problem, but that’s not true. When you wash the chicken, the water you use helps spread the bacteria to your hands and the kitchen sink.
If you start cooking immediately, all the bacteria will die. According to top chefs, it is better to cook chickens twice: after the first heating of the water you should change the water and then continue cooking.

Meat

Like chicken, you should not wash other fresh meats (beef, pork, veal, lamb), because washing helps bacteria spread to the kitchen sink and your hands. You can get rid of bacteria with high temperatures.
Tip! Before cooking use paper towels to remove juices from the surface of the meat. Then wash your hands with soap and warm water.

Pasta

It’s hard to say who thought it was a good idea to wash pasta. Chefs think that washing pasta should be illegal, because water removes the starch that helps the sauce adhere more effectively.
You can wash pasta after cooking only if you want to use it in a salad.

Mushrooms

You should never hold mushrooms under water for a long time or soak them heavily. They absorb water very well. It’s better to rinse them quickly and dry them with a paper towel. You should do this only before cooking. Otherwise they will spoil and lose their springiness.

Always wash!

By contrast, you should definitely wash these foods before use.

Fruits and vegetables with edible skins

If you see that fruits and vegetables with edible skins are clean and shiny, it doesn’t mean you don’t have to wash them at home. You definitely must.
However, do not use soap. Simply dry the produce with a paper towel, or a napkin after a “cold shower”.

Tin cans

Bacteria cannot get inside thanks to the lid. But they will definitely do so if you don’t rinse the can well before opening it.

Fruits and vegetables with inedible skins

No matter how well we peel the skin, bacteria from the skin get into the edible parts. That is why you should always wash bananas, melons, watermelons and other fruits and vegetables with inedible skins before you eat them.

Nuts

Nuts should always be rinsed thoroughly, even when shelled. We never know where they were stored and how they were transported. In addition, washing helps you remove phytic acid that fresh nuts contain. It is used to protect the nuts from parasites, but it can also harm the human body.

Dried fruit

This type of food is considered one of the dirtiest. This especially applies to fruit sold by weight. Even if you bought dried fruit in a nice package, you must wash it first, or even soak it for several hours.
