The directive, which has been approved by Parliament in recent days, talks about limiting the dual quality of the same type and the same brand of food in retail chains across the European Union. If it happens nonetheless that a food with dual quality is found in two countries, the retail chain can expect a fine reaching up to 4% of annual turnover.

The directive also discusses how individual countries should deal with this problem. In case of a violation, a product could be excluded from sale in a specific country. The European Commission says such behaviour by retailers should be classified as an unfair commercial practice.
The directive has been finally approved and its text will in the coming months be sent to the EU Council of Ministers, which has a 24-month deadline for individual countries to adopt it.
