In children, teenagers and even adults, dark spots sometimes appear in the groin or on the neck. This skin condition is called acanthosis, which somewhat looks like dirt and is accompanied by small warts.

Acanthosis

Endocrinologist Eduard Quintanilla explains that acanthosis usually affects flexural parts of the body and areas in the folds – the neck, armpits, joints and, in extreme cases, the mucous membranes of the mouth, lips, palms, soles and other places.

In recent years more attention has been paid to black acanthosis: although this syndrome mainly causes aesthetic problems, its cause lies in internal disorders that can lead to obesity, circulatory system disorders and, in extreme cases, to blockage and rupture of arteries, which directly leads to a heart attack and stroke.

A sign of diabetes

According to the endocrinologist, acanthosis is caused by insulin resistance, which is the first sign of impending diabetes. Early diagnosis can prevent serious diseases.

“When these symptoms appear, the patient must change their lifestyle by giving up sweet drinks – even natural juices, which contain very little fiber; it’s better to eat fruit,” says the specialist.

Other causes of black acanthosis:

  • congenital disorders, including Down syndrome
  • cancer of the stomach, liver, kidneys, bladder, lymphoma
  • some medications, including hormones (human growth hormone, contraceptives)
