In shops across the Czech Republic there is a fairly widespread fish that many know well, like to prepare, but do not know how harmful it is. It is mainly imported to Europe from Asian countries. Although it passes food inspection at the borders, it contains substances that are extremely dangerous to human health.
Find out more about which fish it is and why you should avoid consuming it in our article today.
The truth about the Basa fish (pangasius)
Basa fish is sold in Slovakia and other European countries most often in the form of frozen fillets at a very low price, which is why it is so popular. This fish is farmed around the Mekong River in Vietnam. According to statistics, however, it is one of the most polluted rivers in the world.
They are usually literally raised in wastewater tanks that contain high amounts of toxic substances and bacteria. These then, of course, penetrate into the organs and flesh of the fish. Basa meat is full of heavy metals, chlorine, isomers, hexachlorobenzene and other harmful substances. The USA banned its import because of its high content of contaminated substances in the meat and also due to suspicions that it contains antibiotics.
What harmful substances the Basa fish contains
This fish is very unhealthy not only because of the environment in which it lives but also because it is fattened with waste material, which can seriously damage your health. In the wild, fish mature 4 times more slowly. The artificially farmed Basa sold in our stores is pumped full of antibiotics and hormones that promote its rapid growth.
Its meat contains hormones that accelerate the fish’s growth and reproduction. These hormones can then disrupt hormonal balance in humans. Large retail companies that sell it have no regard for human health. Basa fish is sold at a very low price, which attracts supermarkets and their customers to buy it without knowing about the low quality of its meat.
It contains almost no healthy nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids or other important nutrients that are commonly found in wild fish.
conclusion
If you have so far consumed this fish believing you were doing something for your health, then we must disappoint you. You have been harming your health. We therefore recommend that you stay far away from this fish. Also check whether school cafeterias are buying this fish for your children. They are often pressured to purchase cheaply, but cheap usually does not mean healthy.
