Research has shown that one fairly common natural ingredient can almost perfectly replace the use of conventional oral care products.
Many store-bought toothpastes contain dangerous chemicals that can cause irritation of the gums and oral cavity, or have other negative effects.
Many of you have probably already heard about the wide range of health benefits of coconut oil. One more way to use it is in the care of your teeth and oral hygiene.
What diseases can rotten teeth cause?
Healthy teeth and gums are extremely important for our overall health. Infections of the oral cavity lead to a number of other diseases and health problems.
Examples include heart disease, brain damage with possible development of dementia, as well as stroke or respiratory diseases.
For the reasons above, you should always take good care of your teeth.
Coconut oil as a natural substitute for toothpastes
A recent new study conducted at the Athlons Institute found that this oil is better than all other oral care agents.
It can keep teeth free from deposits, prevent the formation of dental plaque and the development of tartar.
In addition, it also has antibacterial effects and destroys pathogenic bacteria both directly and through enzymes that prevent their multiplication.
Streptococci are the most common type of bacteria that produce acids. These acids are then responsible for damaging tooth enamel and causing tooth decay.
These bacteria feed on sugar and food residues that remain on the teeth. An acidic environment also leads to increased demineralization of the teeth and their subsequent damage.
According to Dr. Damien Brady, the lead researcher at the Athlons Institute of Technology:
“Using coconut oil for dental hygiene represents an interesting alternative to chemical toothpastes.
To achieve the same effect as coconut oil, high concentrations of chemicals would have to be used, which would already be dangerous to health.
Moreover, with increasing bacterial resistance to antibiotics, it is important to look for new natural substances with inherent antibacterial effects.”
Dangerous substances in toothpastes
To avoid the adverse effects of various chemicals, it is necessary to look for new ways of cleaning teeth.
Various dangerous substances are used in toothpastes, such as for example:
- triclosan (highly toxic substance)
- sodium lauryl sulfate (carcinogen, irritates mucous membranes)
- fluoride (carcinogen, damages bones and tooth enamel – dental fluorosis)
- artificial sweeteners like aspartame (neurotoxin)
For example, the first-mentioned triclosan, which is used in toothpastes as an antibiotic, disrupts the endocrine system. Sodium laryl sulfát, on the other hand, damages taste buds.
Recipe for homemade toothpaste with coconut oil
To make homemade toothpaste you will need the following ingredients:
- 1 dcl coconut oil
- 2 to 3 tablespoons of baking soda
- a few drops of essential oil of lemon or mint
Mix the listed ingredients and use the resulting mixture as a replacement for your regular toothpaste.
Another way to improve the care of your teeth is the so-called oil pulling.
Simply take a tablespoon of coconut oil into your mouth and swish it around for 10 to 15 minutes. At the end do not swallow the oil, but spit it out, because it will contain a lot of bacteria.
Until now, it was assumed that teeth cannot repair themselves.
Recent research, however, shows that even tooth enamel can regenerate and this toothpaste will help you significantly with that.
Where to buy the listed ingredients?
Coconut oil can nowadays be bought in many health food stores or even in drugstores.
Baking soda can be bought in almost any grocery store. And essential oils are usually sold in health food stores.
