A green banana is not very appealing, a ripe banana with brown spots on the peel also doesn’t inspire confidence. What exactly is the difference between them? Which should we prefer?

A ripe banana differs from an unripe one by the black dots and spots visible at first glance. They are produced by substances called TNF, which is “tumor necrosis factor”. It is a substance that fights abnormal cells. The darker and more pronounced the spots on the banana peel are, the more of it they contain.

Fully ripe bananas are more beneficial to human health because they strengthen the immune system.

TNF increases a person’s immunity. Japanese scientists confirmed this, even claiming that TNF in bananas helps with cancer.  If you regularly consume ripe bananas, specifically 1 to 2, you thereby contribute to the body’s defenses.

The content of substances in bananas changes with gradual ripening. The number of antioxidants increases and starch is converted into sugars, which are more easily digestible. But that’s not all. Bananas with dark spots on the peel increase the number of white blood cells. They are much healthier than bananas with a greenish peel or ordinary yellow bananas! Nutrition consultant Ing. Libor Javro confirms that  ripening generates a higher number of vitamins and antioxidants in the banana. The riper it is, the more sugars it contains.

A banana with dark spots has anti-cancer effects

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF), which is contained in ripe yellow fruit, has a major effect on cancer cells. It initiates apoptosis in them, that is programmed death.  Bananas suppress cancer just like the substance Lentinan, which is found in the Shitake mushroom.  It is an anti-tumor preparation; it is used to treat tuberculosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, bronchitis, hepatitis and even acts against the HIV virus.

Researchers from the Tokyo National Cancer Research Institute discovered the amazing effect of lentinan. Experiments on mice showed its power; it managed to remove 80 to 100% of tumors in the tested subjects. Clinical studies on humans who were given chemotherapy only confirmed their effect. It led to blocking tumor growth and to an overall prolongation of their life. Bananas significantly stimulate the production of new white blood cells and prevent cell mutations.

Which bananas should you avoid?

To preserve as many beneficial substances as possible,  it is recommended to consume ripe bananas as soon as possible.  Keep them in the refrigerator as little as possible. For example, be careful of already overripe bananas, in which rot processes develop that destroy beneficial substances. Nutrition expert Ing. Libor Javro  points out the increased amount of microorganisms in overripe bananas, which can impair human health.  Better avoid bananas with a completely brown peel or ones that are already split open.

It is best to consume properly ripened, yellow bananas with slight black spots. Then you can be sure that they contain the most optimal amount of health-promoting substances.
