Reduce your salt intake and take medications – these are the usual doctor’s recommendations for keeping blood pressure within normal limits.
However, besides them there are other, less common methods that work just as well, if not better. Let’s take a closer look at them now.
1. Go out in the sun more often
We all know that vitamin D is produced in our skin thanks to sunlight. Few of us, however, know that adequate amounts of this vitamin, among other things, also positively affect blood pressure.
Moreover, studies have shown that through sunlight our body also produces nitric oxide, which directly affects the relaxation and dilation of blood vessels. This consequently leads to a reduction in blood pressure.
2. Drink a little red beet juice
Speaking of nitric oxide, there is a vegetable that is exceptionally rich in it. That’s right, it’s red beet (beetroot).
The red color of beetroot further indicates that it is also rich in strong antioxidants that suppress oxidative stress and inflammation. Both of these factors contribute to high blood pressure.
3. Eat blueberries
Another amazing source of antioxidants that suppress inflammation and lower high blood pressure is blueberries.
When you’re next at the store, be sure to add one — or even better, two — packs of this not only tasty but highly healthy berry fruit to your basket.
You can eat them fresh, or add them to oatmeal, yogurts, or other dishes.
With blueberries, it’s true that they’re equally beneficial fresh or frozen.
4. Start volunteering
There are many reasons why volunteer work has a beneficial effect on high blood pressure.
First are the acquaintances and social bonds you gain from this work, which reduce stress. Second is the fact that you are more physically active while working — which is clearly beneficial for the heart.
And finally, it will give you a feeling of happiness, which in turn promotes the release of endorphins into the blood, which, in addition to pleasant psychological well-being, also contribute to lowering blood pressure.
5. Hug someone for 20 seconds
Experts say that if you hug your partner, a family member, or a friend for just 20 seconds, oxytocin will be released into your body.
It’s a hormone that creates in you a feeling that you are wanted and loved.
The more you hug, the more oxytocin will be released, the better you will feel, and the lower your blood pressure will be.
6. Sing and dance
It doesn’t matter at all whether you’re a good dancer or singer. Simply start singing your favorite song and at the same time start dancing to the rhythm.
According to a recent Japanese study, people who regularly sang and danced had lower blood pressure than their counterparts.
7. Treat yourself to a hearty breakfast
Everyone knows how important breakfast is. If you have blood pressure problems, experts recommend that you enjoy a substantial breakfast.
Studies have confirmed that women whose breakfasts were around 700 calories had greater success in lowering blood pressure than other women.
8. Meditate more often, even at work
Experts report that even a 15-minute meditation during the day is enough to observe a change in blood pressure.
Find a quiet place, close your eyes, and breathe slowly and deeply. Try not to think about anything and focus only on your breath.
Meditation helps reduce stress hormones and thus prevents your blood pressure from rising to dangerous levels.
9. Get a pet
If you have always longed for a pet and your doctor has just told you that you have high blood pressure, then now is the right time to get one.
Experts say that the time spent caring for a pet helps reduce stress and also blood pressure.
10. Go for a walk after dinner
Do you want to stay healthy and keep your blood pressure under control? Then after dinner, instead of sitting in front of the TV, go for a walk.
Light to moderate physical activity significantly reduces the risk of high blood pressure and other cardiovascular problems.
And besides that, a walk is a great way to relieve stress after a demanding day.
