Maintaining the health of our kidneys is essential, because they cleanse our body of toxins from everyday life, and they are also important for maintaining the balance of our hormones and removing excess fluid from the body.
Unfortunately, protecting our kidneys is a complicated task, because we consume many foods that are believed to be healthy every day and that are especially harmful to our kidneys.
Here is a list of foods that at first glance appear to be healthy, but in reality are very taxing on our kidneys
1. Avocado
Avocado is incredibly popular worldwide, but overdoing it – especially if you have kidney problems – can cause serious issues. This is all possible because avocados are incredibly rich in potassium and if too much of this mineral accumulates in the blood, problems with heart rhythm and muscle cramps can occur.
2. Meat
Excessive meat consumption can lead to kidney problems because the body breaks down the structure of meat very slowly and the toxins that remain in the process of food utilization burden the kidneys. A diet based exclusively on meat products can easily cause kidney stones. To prevent this, it is better to follow a diet rich in vegetables and meat.
3. Salt
For the sake of preserving our health, the recommended daily amount of salt should not exceed 2300 mg, which is approximately one teaspoon of salt. Excessive salt intake burdens the kidneys, which results in urinary problems and high blood pressure. Therefore if possible, avoid consuming processed foods, because they are filled with salt.
4. Banana
If you have kidney problems, be careful, because bananas, like avocados, have a high potassium content. For a healthy adult the recommended daily amount of potassium ranges from approximately 3,500 to approximately 4,700 mg compared to bananas of average size containing 537 mg of potassium.
5. Dairy products
Cheeses, yogurts, milk drinks are full of vitamins and nutrients, but they can do more harm than expected. Because of their high phosphorus content they are difficult for the kidneys to process.
6. Wholegrain bread
Wholegrain bread is also very rich in phosphorus and potassium, so a slice of wholegrain bread contains 70 mg of potassium and 57 mg of phosphorus.
7. Orange and orange juice
The orange is a true super fruit because it contains a low calorie content and high vitamin C. However, if you have kidney problems, you should pay attention to this fruit because of its high potassium content. A medium orange contains 240 mg of phosphorus, while a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice contains 470 mg.
If you have the slightest suspicion that you may have kidney problems, be sure to stop food intake or at least reduce its intake and seek medical help as soon as possible.
